Herbert and I were in 6th grade together. I remember him as polite, quiet. He had a distinctive, positive speaking voice something like Ray Milland. Herbert's calling card was playing drums, and I think it meant a lot to him. He had to be excused from class a couple of times a week for band practice which irritated Mr. Hathaway (nicknamed him "Sticks") since Herbert would miss our history lesson or whatever it was. The students of Paradise School were scattered over a twenty square-mile area ("Paradise Valley"). Busses carried us to and from school. The after-school bus wasn't always waiting at 3:30 so Herbert would serenade us on his snare drum held in place with a strap around his neck. He only knew one pattern, a military number that lasted 45 seconds. He would repeat his piece until the bus got there. I can still remember it note-for-note. Actually I can play it.
I suspect he played in a band at LVHS. Maybe someone who knew Herbert in music will see the bit about drums and recall a friendship with him.
