In Memory

Douglas Willetts

Douglas Willetts

Miles and miles of smiles is what my dad, Doug Willetts left in his tracks. We are saddened and heartbroken over his loss on Saturday, October 29th, 2022 at age 76. After his battle with cancer, Doug passed away at home surrounded by his flock of girls... Erin, the love of his life and beloved wife of nearly 55 years; his only daughter Laurel; and granddaughter Kylie;  as well as his son in law and buddy, Tim.

Douglas was born on August 4th, 1946 to Gwen and Jack in Las Vegas, Nevada. He grew up with his older brother Dick and younger brother Joe. Doug graduated from Las Vegas High School and loved to play ball in his early years. He was a retired Teamster truck driver and a veteran of the US Air Force.

The many friendships throughout his life were all meaningful to him as he so enjoyed being a part of their lives. Doug is irreplaceable and we will miss his compassion, kindness, humor, stories, and his unconditional love for all of us. We will be having a private celebration of life as he requested. We will carry him in our hearts, minds and souls forever... our strong yet gentle giant.

I'm so sorry to hear we've lost Doug. We walked Graduation together.  My heart goes out to Erin. They were lifelong partners, much to be desired.

I didn't know Doug well, remember him as soft-spoken, a gentleman.  A big guy, maybe 6-4, he was a well-rounded athlete, used his size intelligently, a good defensive player.  I believe he was at least a fringe member of Chris Kelly's basketball crew, recall playing with Chris, Doug, Russell Masek, other LVHS grads one Sunday morning in the Fremont gym when home from college for Christmas.

When Mr. Okelberry took roll, first day of 9th grade P.E., he pronounced Doug's last name "Willays" followed by chuckles from the peanut gallery.  He apologized, explained he'd known someone with the name who went by the French pronunciation.  As the semester passed Doug established himself as probably the best player in every sport, especially basketball. Finally at our graduation ceremony Mr. Okelberry gave Doug the award as Fremont's best athlete.
